Technote 1108, "Unknown Sound Features," describes some undocumented features of the Mac OS Sound Manager, including multiple sound output and input channels; volume and panning adjustments; and sound channel monitoring.

[2] Apple System Profiler 1.3.1

Apple System Profiler (ASP) enables users to look up information about their computer configuration. Changes in version 1.3.1 include a fix for a bug where some startup disks are incorrectly reported as "unknown"; added support for the Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh; and corrected CPU speed listings for 7500, 8500, and 9500 series computers.

[3] Apple 1.2 GB Firmware Utility 1.1

This bootable disk image contains a utility that fixes the "flashing question mark at startup" problem that occurs with 1.2 GB ATA hard drives (versions 1.37 and lower) in some Power Macintosh and Performa computers.

The AppleShare IP 5.0.2 update release supports Mac OS 8 and StarNine's WebSTAR API (application programming interface), and fixes a bug involving NT file servers and Finder 8.

Metrowerks just released CodeWarrior Latitude Developer Release 2 (DR2), a tool that helps programmers port Mac OS applications to the Rhapsody operating system. Suggested retail price is US$ 399. Academic pricing is US$ 119.

[QuickTime VR Authoring Studio is a new professional-level commercial application (US$ 395) for creating QuickTime VR panoramas and object movies.] The contest deadline is January 31, 1998.

Web Week's Annual Survey of Web Design reported that 47 percent of web content is created with Mac OS-based computers. Here are the responses to the survey question "What platforms do you use to create the majority of your web content?" (Multiple answers were possible.)

[12] Apple Launches a New K-12 School Promotion

Public or private nonprofit K-12 schools in the United States can get special benefits when they purchase computers directly through Apple's new "Power of 10" program. Apple will credit 10 percent of the pretax purchase price of each computer; the credit can be applied toward new products on Apple's education price list.
